Ahankara is the root cause of self-awareness. It divides the world into “mine” and “not mine.” The other three aspects of mind are manas (perceiving mind), buddhi (intelligence), and chitta (feeling). By identifying things and qualities in the world, ahankara enables the soul to relate itself to perceived objects.
In yogic sciences, when we say human mind, there are 16 parts to your mind. These 16 parts can be categorized as fundamentally 4 parts. These 4 parts are Buddhi (Intellect), Ahankara (Identity), Manas (Memory) and Chitta (No English translation available).
Manas, Buddhi, Chitta and Ahankara are only Vritti-bhedas or functional aspects of the mind. The Manas has all things for its objects and extends through the past, present and future; it is one only, but has various functions. Otherwise, Manas gets its instructions from the habit patterns stored in Chitta, that are colored by Ahamkara, the Ego. Often, Buddhi is clouded over by all of the coloring and impressions in the Chitta. Thus, a major task of sadhana, spiritual practices, is to un-cloud the clouded Buddhi. So essentially we are made of 35 ideas, which make up the causal body of man. So, to answer your question directly: the astral world and body are made of “mental, emotional, and lifetronic” elements. Astral mental elements would be manas and buddhi, the ones you mention.
Samskaras or impressions of actions are imbedded here. These four subtle aspects are sometimes difficult to understand due to its complexity and subtleness. It is not easy to comprehend the difference between “Mun, Buddhi, Chit and Ahankar” (Mind, Intellect, Conscience and Ego), but in the realm of spirituality, it is essential to know it.
Ahamkara uses the Buddhi for its reasoning capacity, and uses Chitta based memory to validate its own experiential conclusions. What is important for us to note is that Ahamkara does not have direct domination over Manas or the Mind.
Man means mind and mind means Man. The first dimension of it is called as Buddhi or the intellect – the logical dimension of thought. When it is engaged in the thought process, it is called Manas. When it is engaged in discriminating between what is permanent and what is transient, it is called Buddhi (intelligence). In its role as a reservoir of memory, it is called Chitta.
If manas is not coordinated well with buddhi, and/or we are not in the habit of listening to buddhi, then manas gets its instructions for somewhere else, because manas itself cannot make any decisions.
